What to Look for When Selecting Exterior Solar Lights

No longer is your outdoor lighting tied to an electrical power cord. Today the choices are practically limitless when it comes to decorative exterior solar lights. But with so many options, how do you choose? Keep these helpful tips in mind as you begin your search.

  • It might seem obvious but start by determining your lighting needs. Are you primarily interested in ambience or mood lighting on a porch or deck? Or perhaps you need safety and security lights around a walkway or dark corner. There is also landscaping lighting which can be used to accent ground cover or showcase a particular tree, flowerbeds or shrubbery. And many people are now going solar when it comes to task lighting for outdoor entertaining including kitchens, pools and hot tubs.
  • The next question is there enough sunlight to recharge the solar batteries on a daily basis. Depending on the type of lights you choose, some are now capable of charging even when the skies are cloudy or when located in partially shade. This is due to advancements in photovoltaic cell technology along with the development of more efficient lighting batteries. Always check to make sure your solar lights are equipped with LED bulbs. These bulbs use less energy, are long lasting and do well in today’s ever changing weather conditions.
  • It is important to note that solar lights, no matter where they are used, how much sunlight they get, or their wattage, will require some maintenance. The shades or panels, whether plastic or glass, will need to be wiped down on a regular basis. Inspect the entire unit for any damage, especially the battery case. Solar lights are designed to be weatherproof, but that often doesn’t stop the formation of battery corrosion, especially during periods of high humidity or frequent thunderstorms. This white powder can easily be removed by cleaning the battery with a soft toothbrush or fine grit sandpaper and then gently wiping out the inside of the battery compartment.
